Online gambling in Sweden accounts for 26% of all gambling in the country, the majority of which is online casino roulette according to a new study due to be released shortly which is currently more than any other European country. Conducted by the Research Institute of Industrial Economics (RIIE) based in Stockholm, the research is due to be submitted to the Swedish government with the aim of recognising online gambling’s growing contribution to the Swedish economy.
The relationship between the country and electronic gaming has been a turbulent one due to ongoing criticisms by the EU over its monopoly of state gaming and lack of compliance with EU laws on border restrictions of online gaming operators. At the time of writing this article, all gambling entertainment and activities remain under the control of the Swedish government and associated relevant bodies.
The subject of Sweden’s gambling monopoly is sure to be included in the agenda for the 3rd Annual I-Gaming Forum which takes place in Stockholm during mid April. The main reason for the conference is to take a much needed look at the taxation and regulation of Scandinavian and Swedish online casino businesses.
