    Roulette History

So the word Roulette originates from France and its true translation means “small wheel”. The very first roulette wheel was invented by the French scientist Blaise Pascal in 1655. It was used in a monastery to help prevent boredom (I’m sure monasteries in those days weren’t fun places anyway). How it got into a Parisian casino from a monastery is another matter (another website) but it did find its way to Paris and became a glamorous casino game.

Now for something I bet you didn’t know… in 1842, the brothers Francois and Luis Blanc opened the first casinos in Monte Carlo. According to legend the devil gave them the secret of roulette in exchange for their souls. These two brothers then chose to use the numbers 0 to 36, whose sum when added together comes to… yes… 666… the number of the BEAST! Hahaha Hey try and prove that story… but it would make a great movie. I would have Joe Pesci play the role of the devil. He is a great bad guy in movies.

The first modern roulette wheel (alternating colors with odd and even numbers) was also developed and used in France. It then went in the early 1800s to the USA. Miners loved the game and so it became very popular. Roulette history was then changed forever. For some reason, probably related to money and the house edge, they introduced the double zero. This extra slot on the wheel certainly increases the house edge. By the way, play the European version and not the American version, even if you live in the USA.

Online casino roulette and roulette played in land based casinos is so popular simply because it is very easy to play and very exciting as the ball spins around the spinning wheel and comes to a stop on a number which pays out 35-1.
