Casino Roulette Policies

Question: Do casinos have guidelines regarding the minimum number of rotations a roulette ball should make before falling on the track? If the roulette wheel seizes to move before the ball rests in one of the pockets or stops in less than a quarter of a rotation after the ball comes to rest in the pocket, would that be of any concern?

Consider the following situation: A player approaches an empty table in the morning and bets about $10 on a straight up single number. After the spin, a new dealer is brought into the roulette game, he looks up and yells out, “What number do I have to hit?” The player places another $10 on the same number again. The new dealer says: “You can’t bet on that number but you have to place a bet on the numbers that I pick.” What are you going to say about that?

Answer: Casino operators have a lot of security policies in place to protect the integrity of their games. The last thing a casino would want is a dodgy dealer who thinks he can get away with it or a player exploiting a rigged roulette wheel or a dealer by clocking the wheel.

Is the wheel arriving at a sudden stop while the ball is rotating above on the track permissible behavior? Not in any place that I ever dealt in or probably any casino or gaming hall for that matter.

When I dealt roulette games, I was taught to either speed up or slow down both the wheel and ball release before each spin to avoid wheel clocking. Yet with the wheel moving in one direction, the ball in the other and frets in the way of a descending ball, it’s honestly impossible to guess where the ball is going to rest. A slowing or stopped wheel definitely helps, but casino operators, for obvious reasons, just aren’t open to those ideas.

And as far as the dealer yelling and not letting place bets on the numbers you want is concerned, well it’s nothing but a rude cocky dealer. Believe me some of these guys think they run the place!

The bottom line is that every casino has its own procedures for dealers to follow, as well as certain guidelines that maintain the wheel speed within a specific range and allow players to bet one numbers they choose. You can always speak to the pit boss to solve problems.
